Common, known to be distributed in circumglobal pattern throughout tropical and subtropical areas of Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans (Mortimer and Donnelly, 2008).

This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


The species nests on insular and mainland sandy beaches throughout tropics and subtropics (Mortimer and Donnelly, 2008). A drastic population decline due to tortoiseshell trading, egg collection, meat consumption, destruction of nesting and foraging habitats, hybridization with other species, entanglement with marine debris and oil caused pollution were observed within recent time frame (Mortimer and Donnelly, 2008).
